"From social movements and leftist governments in Latin America"
What happens on the continent? What are the goals, dynamics and prospects? How do militarization and military actions in authorizing the ultra-right neo-liberal left? A report
on Mexico and Central America.
ALBA or FTAA: Central America lies between the U.S. economic power in the north and the initiative of the leftist governments in South America.
The U.S. attempt to bind the different countries on free trade agreement itself. Mexico plays a special role as a "little brother" who makes the foreclosure of the migration movement from the south and a cheap production area, market and labor forces, the army and this is across the border.
It is discussed the FTAA is: a neoliberal economic zone from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. Contrast, aim at the left-wing governments of the South American States, led Venezuela with Hugo Chávez, cohesive regional economic projects such as the ALBA on.
The power of the elites is unbroken in Mexico and Central America, the neoliberal restructuring of the countries to intensify the social situation more. Large parts of the impoverished Bevöllkerung has in the past two decades, seen as the only solution to the migration to the United States.
But in 2009, the social movements in El Salvador and Honduras, grown strong. In El Salvador was after 20 years, the former guerrilla and now a political party of the FMLN Mauricio Funes to win the presidential elections. succeeded
In Honduras Manuel Zelaya is to put social and political reforms and to politicize the population. A military coup thwarted finally participatory transformation of the autocratic system, but the resistance movement is still active.
In Guatemala can unexpectedly come to light secret police archives as a basis for the Investigation of Crimes provide the 36-year civil war, the children of the former guerrilla analyze the files and are confronted with their own family history.
the Zapatistas in Mexico have indeed withdrawn from the public, but they could successfully make a left-wing network in the country. Trade unions and local resistance movements everywhere in the country. In contrast, the U.S. militarization of the country is funded under the Plan Mexico and the state failure by the violence of drug cartels. is to show
the diversity and dynamics of resistance against the neo-liberal sellout in Mesoamerica and corrupt right structures of society, but also the state repression against them.
to be discussed similarities and differences to the aims and prospects here and the opportunities to get involved in solidarity - here and there.
